National Weather Service reports that a tornado hit Stoughton early Friday morning. Residents on Turnpike Street were left stunned by downed power lines and trees.
The tornado was blowing at 70-80 miles per hour as it advanced along Eighth Street.
Karen Bowie, a resident of Turnpike Street in Boston 25 News said: “It was frightening at the time.”
After a large, direct hit from a tree in her backyard, one side of the house was covered in branches.
Her roof was also damaged.
Bowie demonstrated to Boston 25 News Bob Ward the power of the falling tree that knocked off plaster from the walls in her dining room.
The posts holding up the walls are cracked on the interior of the home.
Karen sought shelter in the basement during the storm.
You’re trying to hide as much as possible. Bowie said, “Everything is being cleaned up.”
The trunk of a huge tree that split nearby fell to the ground.
Marie Albaniel was alone with her mother at home. It was therefore too close.
Albaniel is scared because she’s 84.
Justina Malave, who was at her neighbor’s house working on the computer when the wind destroyed the patio area.
A split tree crushed her shed.
“I’ve never been in a tornado, and this is something I did not expect to happen,” Malave explained. “I am not shocked, but I just want to know what to do.”
Stoughton was among the communities in New England that were hit by a rare twister on Friday.
A tornado caused destruction in both Mansfield, Massachusetts and North Attleboro.
A tornado also toppled trees and ripped roofing materials in Weymouth.
A Rhode Island tornado lifted an automobile off a highway interstate Friday morning as severe weather hit New England.
From south to north storms with hail, strong winds, rain, lightning and downpours swept the entire state. This included communities that were not hit by tornadoes.
Tornadoes were also confirmed this summer near Foxboro/Easton in New Hampshire, as well as in Mattapoisett and North Brookfield.
