Storm surges from Idalia, the category 3 hurricane that made landfall in Florida on Wednesday morning caused devastating damage along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Floridians have been warned for several days by forecasters that Idalia, as she moved from Cuba to Florida and then landed in their state, would rapidly strengthen. Landfall occurred at 7:45 in the morning near Keaton Beach. Taylor County is located about 75 mile south of Tallahassee.

Storm surges, the increase in sea levels that occur during hurricanes, are one of its most dangerous features. Super moons overnight meant high tides that were already one foot higher than usual, increasing the potential damage. Social media began sharing videos on Wednesday of the storm’s destruction.

Video footage captured by a camera at Horseshoe Beach, Dixie County shows that the water level rose to at least ten feet.

As ocean water makes its way across the Howard Frankland Bridge connecting St. Petersburg and Tampa via Old Tampa Bay in another video, you can see cars driving on it.

One more video shows a storm surge rush into a Cedar Key condominium. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty reported to Newsweek that the storm surge at Cedar Key measured around 6,8 feet.

Reed Timmer (at X.com, formerly Twitter), a weather forecaster, wrote: “Storm Idalia has caused damage in Cedar Key and blown out doors to a condominium complex.”

One video, which was viewed by more than 8,00 people on Wednesday afternoon showed a roof flying off the Seaside Resort in Fort Myers Beach.

Spectrum News 13 has shared this time-lapse from Steinhatchee, as a storm surge hit the town.

What’s that moving across your screen center? When Jeff Butera uploaded the video, he said: “That is a dumpster.”

In Perry, the winds were very strong. A video shows a tree being snapped in two by the hurricane Idalia.

National Hurricane Center’s (NHC) warning stated that the storm surge along Florida Big Bend could be as high as 12 feet. Other areas to either north or south may receive 12 feet. Nearly the entire Gulf Coast of Florida is susceptible to some sort of surge. Also, the coastlines of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, as well as northeastern Florida are all expected to receive 3 to 6 foot.

Newsweek quoted Douty as saying, “The worse has likely been seen but higher water levels will cause problems for the rest the day.”

As many are not prepared for the rapid rise of water, the storm surge is one of the most dangerous aspects to a Hurricane.

Jonathan Porter, AccuWeather’s chief meteorologist told Newsweek previously that “Surge can be a unique threat. Not as many people are familiar with it.” Rain and wind are familiar to us all. Surge, on average, not as many have seen how quickly the water level can increase. Unprepared people are often caught off guard by the surge.

Idalia, according to forecasts, will hit Georgia before moving on into South Carolina and North Carolina. Models predict the storm will return to Florida, though most forecasts show it fading out into the Atlantic Ocean.
