On the night of Saturday, September 30, the authorities of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (Usac) issued an official statement regarding the controversy over the alleged removal of murals from the Central Campus.

It was in a video published on official social networks where said university stated that, during the recovery work on the central facilities, the corresponding maintenance was carried out, including erasing graffiti, graffiti and stains; and not murals, as was announced on social networks.

It should be noted that the Sancarlista community evidenced in photographs the murals that had been eliminated, which were located in a plaza of the Faculty of Legal Sciences, between the S-2 and Student Welfare buildings, and in the School of Political Science, building M -5.

However, the authorities stressed that the information was false and stated that they are “committed” to protecting the facilities. At the same time, they are contemplating carrying out maintenance and restoration work on historical murals in order to preserve them, the first being by Mario Lopez Larrave, located in the Educational Resources building.

Through social networks, several users and people who are part of the Usac community expressed their discontent after the “supposed” removal of murals, which were located on the walls of two academic units.

One was located in a plaza of the Faculty of Legal Sciences, between the S-2 and Student Welfare buildings, and the second, in the School of Political Science, building M-5. In the images that became a trend on different digital platforms, the before and after of the murals could be seen and that they were completely covered with gray paint.

The USAC logo was placed on the first mural, while the other painting was covered with a brick-colored one. According to Internet users and some students of said study house, the murals were not that old.

The topic generated controversy on social networks, because the students indicated that they are part of university history, since the USAC was named Cultural Heritage of the Nation on December 19, 2011, this under Ministerial Agreement number 1199-2011 .

“The USAC was declared a National Heritage Site. Does the cowardly usurper commit crimes with this action?” wrote one user.

“Not to mention that the USAC was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation (that includes the murals), a crime that they would like to commit, since they would justify themselves with some wisachada in the shadow of the impunity of the toga cartel in the OJ,” another person highlighted.

“Deleting the USAC murals is a violent act on the country’s memory,” another comment read.
