Storm Babet caused a flood of water to breach the Museum of Making, which was founded in Derby in 1861 in what’s considered as the first modern factory in history.

After Storm Babet flooded the ground floor of the Museum of Making, Derby in the UK, the museum suffered major damage. 70cm of water poured into the basement. The Museum of Making, located in the old Derby Silk Mill – a UNESCO Heritage Site regarded as being the first modern factory ever built – has started a fund raising campaign to cover the costs.

Tony Butler, executive director of the Climate Change Institute says that he is not surprised by the fact that the Industrial Revolution was born here and we now bear the brunt climate change.

According to BBC’s latest statistics, the storm has caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure. At least seven deaths have been reported in England and Scotland. The storm has caused major damage to infrastructure and homes.

After an 18-million-pound renovation, the Museum of Making was reopened to the public in 2021. It contains objects and archives that tell Derby’s story of industrial heritage. This work also included flood-adaptation measures, such as having the majority of exhibits located on the upper levels. They were therefore protected from floodwater.

Butler says that the collections on the upper levels are safe, but there is a lot of equipment damage on the lower floors. This includes the kitchen, lifts and workshop, where visitors can try out some industrial machinery.

Butler believes that the collection of the Museum is more resilient than the average. He says that a large, heavy ornamental fireplace on the first floor had suffered some damage from water. “But it has been in the open for most of its life, so it is pretty tough.” Many of our objects are robust because we’re an industrial museum. This is different from other collections, where the majority of items are made out of canvas or paper.

The museum’s income is at risk due to disruptions in the lead up to Christmas, which are usually busy. Bookings are popular at the Museum because of its kitchens and catering.

Mr Butler said: “It is a period of events and we will need to estimate the damage. It’s one thing to reopen to the public, but it may be a while before you can fully function with revenue-generating activities.

Alex Rock, director of operations at the museum, told BBC Radio Derby: “Our financial position is really in a precarious situation and we depend so heavily on what we do every day. Our business will be severely disrupted. This could cost us tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds in lost revenue. It’s unprecedented.”

Climate change is predicted to cause more heavy rain and flooding. Storms are stronger when the sea is hotter. The warmer air can also hold more water, resulting in higher rainfall rates.

A museum exhibition already exists that examines Derby’s contribution to the Industrial Revolution and the links between climate change. The museum plans to hold an exhibition next year titled A for Anthropocene. This will examine the geological period where humans began to make a major impact on Earth’s global system. The Derby Silk Mill may be the exhibit A.
