The city is prepared to contract for the emergency demolition of a downtown building that partially collapsed in July.

A resolution to hire Bolle Contracting of Clare to demolish the property at 641 S. Saginaw St. has been sent to the City Council after a Genesee District Court judge granted the city’s request to tear down the building in September.

The council resolution says the $139,000 cost of the demolition would be assessed as a lien on the vacant property, located immediately north of Paul’s Pipe Shop.

Flint officials had condemned the building shortly before part of its rear wall collapsed into Brush Alley, contending the structure had extensive interior and exterior damage and was a danger to the public.

They initially filed a District Court complaint, identifying a husband and wife as the owners of the property and citing them for maintaining a dangerous structure, but Judge David Guinn’s September order dismissed the citation because the property had been sold on a land contract in 2015 to Love Holdings LLC.

MLive-The Flint Journal could not immediately reach a representative of Love Holdings, a limited liability company that has previously listed former Michigan State University and NBA player Morris Peterson as its resident agent.

Guinn’s order says Love Holdings representatives didn’t appear in court to defend against city citations and issued a default judgment against the company, granting the city authority to tear down the building and assess the lien.

The city’s demolition resolution describes the building as abandoned.

Brush Alley remains closed to the public in the area of the wall collapse — between Second and Third streets.

The rear of the building at 641 S. Saginaw is in Brush Alley. That’s where a portion of the building, painted with murals of Mama Sol, a national hip-hop and spoken word artist, and Mari Copeny, better known as Little Miss Flint, collapsed.

The former Classic Tailor building was constructed in 1890.

In 2008, a former property owner announced plans to rehabilitate the property, anchoring its ground floor with a Biggby’s Coffee franchise, but those plans never materialized.
