Firefighters reported that a Syracuse house was severely damaged by a fire on Thanksgiving Day after it spread from the garage to the roof.
Zach Smith, Deputy Chief of Syracuse Fire Department, reported that around 2:17 pm, firefighters were called to the 132 Crestview drive in Syracuse’s Valley Neighborhood for a potential house fire.
Firefighters first saw flames and heavy smoke coming out of the garage attached to a one-story house, according a press release issued by the Syracuse Fire Department on Thursday.
The fire began in the garage when the cooking food left unattended.
Smoke detectors alerted three people who were in the home when the fire broke out. Firefighters said that all three people were able escape the house before the firefighters arrived. However, two were treated on the spot for smoke inhalation and burns.
The deputy chief reported that a person had been taken to hospital, and neighbors offered assistance to a child who lived in the house.
Flames from the garage spread into the kitchen, and then to the roof. Smith stated that after the fire had been extinguished, fire crews checked for hotspots and tore down cabinets and walls in the kitchen. The firefighters also used fans to help ventilate the house.
The fire crews were able to put out the flames in 40 minutes after they had been brought under control.
Fire, smoke and water damages caused extensive damage to parts of the home’s garage and first floor. Smoke damage was also suffered by the rest of first floor.
