Hayots house damaged by tornadoes in 2022

Hayots said to WPTV that they had received $17,000 from FEMA, but they paid the remainder out-of-pocket because they didn’t have insurance.
Marcia Hayot explained, “We stopped buying insurance as it was becoming prohibitively costly. We decided to put aside our money.” We decided to put money aside so that if we ever needed it, we would have it.

Shannon Martin, an analyst at Bankrate, said to WPTV that it’s “understandable” for people to struggle with their homeowner payments.
Martin stated that homeowners are dropping their insurance coverage or, at least, the additional coverage they have for flood and wind damage.
We never want people to drop their coverage. They’re probably having problems securing insurance and other things. Martin advised: “Always look for other options.” Talk to your agent to see if you can increase the deductible. Many plans in Florida include separate coverage for wind and hail, which is a percentage.
Hayots told WPTV that they would rather self-insure because property insurance costs them about $8,000 per year.
