A family member believes that Colombian Christmas candles could have caused a fire
Fire rescue officials reported that a woman and child were injured in an overnight house fire on Friday in North Lauderdale.
The fire broke out at the house in the 8100 Block of Southwest 11th Street just before one o’clock.
The two victims were identified by neighbors as a mother with a child. Fire officials confirmed that the injured were transported to Broward Health North. The authorities said that they expect them to survive.
Most of the damages were concentrated in the corner at the back of the house. The flames started from the top of the house.
Miguel Gonzalez was inside the home at the time and called 911. He escaped but his niece and sister were not able to escape.
Gonzalez: “I crawled inside and part of the ceiling came down. It wasn’t in my face, it was in front of me.” “And that whole smoke got inside me.”
Gonzalez stated that Gonzalez’s sister had been placed in a medically induced coma. Her 4-year-old daughter, however, was showing signs of improving as of the afternoon of Friday, though she remained critical.
The city of North Lauderdale officials said that a golf car charging outside the house may have started the fire. However, Gonzalez thinks candles for the Colombian Dia de las velitas, or in English “Day of the Little Candles”, a celebration of the start of the holiday season, may be behind the incident.
Gonzalez stated that the candle was left burning all night by the family.
He said, “the people need to be more aware of these things.” You think you can let it go because you are at home.
One neighbor told her another neighbor had woken her in the middle night, to warn her of a fire threat. They were worried that the flames might spread.
Michelle Barandes, a neighbor, said: “It’s terrifying to be woken in the middle night and to see the house of your neighbor burning.” It was frightening.
American Red Cross provides assistance to the family because they are unable to go back to their home.
