The torrential downpour that swept across Massachusetts on Tuesday turned the roads into rivers and left motorists stranded.

The National Weather Service warned of flash flooding as heavy rains and thunderstorms embedded in the showers saturated the area.

Flash flood warnings are in place until 2 pm for Bristol, Essex Middlesex Norfolk Plymouth Suffolk and Worcester counties.

A flash flood warning is in place for Central Middlesex and Eastern Essex through Tuesday night.

The NWS predicts rain to fall between 1 and 2.5 inches an hour. In the areas that have been warned, additional rain of up to two inches is possible.

The NWS predicts flash floods in Lawrence, Boston and Cambridge as well as Lynn, Somerville.

Natick Police reported that “multiple vehicles were stranded” because of flooding along Route 9 near Route 27.

In a recent tweet, Natick Police warned drivers to avoid these areas and expect delays.

As Tewksbury’s streets and yards were inundated with water, children could be seen paddling around on kayaks.

Andover saw rushing water flowing through the backyard fence, down the driveway and into the road.

Billerica’s parking lot was also flooded.

The morning rush hour commute on Interstate 95 was made dangerous by rain.

Do not drown! MassDOT Safety stated, “We strongly urge you not to drive on flood-prone streets. Six inches of water moving quickly can knock an adult over, while 12 inches will carry a car away.
