After sewage backups caused “catastrophic damage” to homes, those affected by the flash floods on Thursday are calling for restoration help.
Deven Raval of PuroClean called the situation “mayhem.” His company normally deals with about five to six calls a day. This time was different.
He was answering about 70 phone calls on Friday morning. The majority of his calls, he said, were about sewage.
Raval stated that “something went wrong very badly with Ottawa’s sewer system”.
On Thursday, video clips showing water pouring out of toilets and bathtubs shook and horrified local users of social media. Raval crews have seen the effects of basements being flooded with unsanitary water: damage to flooring, personal belongings and furniture.
He said: “It’s not just a portion of the basement; it’s your entire basement.” Six to eight inches came in… This is a lot of water coming back in.
Green said that he received about 100 phone calls before Friday noon, and expected another 50.
“It’s widespread. He said it was everywhere. Some of these are quite catastrophic, where water has entered people’s homes and caused them to lose their livelihoods.
Sewage water has also been seen to backflow into basements and homes, which is a serious health issue.
He said that people want to believe it is just water and storm drains. When storm drains overflow they can mix with sewage.
Green’s crews are fully protected from pathogens by wearing masks, gloves and suits.
Residents must also be prepared by wearing gloves, shoes and washing their hands.
He said that people were literally walking through their basements without realizing it was sewage.
