On Friday, community members rallied outside Colonial Donuts in Oakland on Lakeshore Avenue to show their support for the beloved store that has been robbed twice within six months.
Rachel, a local woman said: “Colonial Donuts has been a cornerstone of our neighborhood for many years.” It’s important to me that I am there to show my support.
It also shows the “extremely pressing problem” we face with local criminality.
People stood in front of her holding signs reading “Don’t gamble your safety” or “Recall Pamela Price.”
A man displayed a sign that showed the annual crime rate in Oakland: Robberies were up by 35% over last years and burglaries, 26%.
Colonial Donuts, a popular donut shop in the area of the rally was broken into twice: on Tuesday evening and Friday morning.
Two men are seen in a surveillance video that KTVU shared. They jump the counter at 4:20 am and make off with the cash register. Before he leaves, one of the suspects grabs a donut.
In June the shop was also robbed.
This week, other businesses were also targeted. These included Lululemon in Broadway as well as a number of downtown companies during an anti-Palestine protest.
East Lake Bella Vista community members wrote that the incident at Colonial Donuts was “an indication of a bigger issue” – that of poor leadership, which allowed for the situation to reach unprecedented heights.
The group is calling on city leaders to “take immediate and meaningful steps” towards creating a safer environment.
Oakland Police and Mayor Sheng Thao both promised to do this the day before.
They announced, for example, that they will extend their holiday safety program as they crackdown on the business burglaries.
The police explained that they are strengthening their capability to combat crime in graveyard shifts, by transferring their undercover officers into the commercial burglary teams.
James Beere, deputy chief of the Department, said that officers from the Ceasefire Unit have been assigned to special assignments from the patrol units in three different areas.
Price has always maintained she’s doing what she said she would do during the campaign.
She and others point out that progressive prosecutors, such as the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy study, are not linked to violent crimes on the rise.
Her campaign organized a meeting at the Cornerstone Baptist Church of Oakland earlier this week to combat her recall.
She also said she cared about “the safety of people so that they can walk and shop wherever they may be.”
