12 News learned that demolition will begin soon on the historic Block Island hotel destroyed in the fire last weekend.
Harborside Inn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, caught fire in late Saturday night.
All fire departments in the state responded with vigor to the blaze. Block Island Ferry and U.S. Coast Guard firefighters transported equipment and ladder trucks to the island.
Nearly 80 firefighters from Rhode Island were dispatched to the island over night, said Rhode Island’s State Fire Marshall Timothy McLaughlin.
The response from the public was incredible, he added. All involved deserve kudos.
McLaughlin says that 12 News will demolish the hotel later this month after it has been deemed as a complete loss.
The situation is a safety and life hazard. “It’s an unstable building right now,” he declared.
McLaughlin stated that the fire broke out near an exhaust on the 1st floor and spread rapidly to the roof.
McLaughlin replied, “This is an older building.” “The wood has aged, as have most of those buildings.” A fire that starts will spread.
There was no injury and it is not known what caused the accident.
Maryanne Crawford of New Shoreham told 12 News most hotel guests had left the island by now or were staying in other places.
Crawford stated that at least 10 local businesses were affected by the fire, and it was a sad event to witness.
Sabina Matos visited the island to assess damage. Sabina visited the island in order to determine the extent of the damage. She stated that the state will assist affected businesses in their recovery.
Crawford asked residents to conserve until normal water supplies are restored after the town declared a state of emergency last weekend.
Block Island Ferry is now operating on a normal schedule. However, over the long weekend additional personnel and equipment was shipped.
