On Saturday, deadly tornadoes ripped through Middle Tennessee, causing thousands of people to lose power and suffer property damage. Six people had been confirmed dead as of Sunday afternoon. Three deaths occurred in Clarksville, and three others in Madison. Over the course of this region, there were dozens more injuries.
After 1 p.m., a tornado hit Clarksville. It was followed shortly by a storm with tornadic activity that swept through Dickson and Cheatham counties, as well as Davidson, Robertson and Sumner. National Weather Service reports quarter-sized hail and collapsed buildings in the area. Power lines were also downed, trees uprooted, and vehicles flipped.
As of Sunday, 62 people had been treated in the Clarksville hospital. Two adults and a child were among those who died.
Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden stated that the teams worked through the night.
Golden stated that “right now we have our first responder agency out there clearing the area, searching for people and making sure they are safe.”
People in Clarksville, Tennessee reported that the tornado passed directly before them as they traveled on Interstate 24. Interstate 24 was closed just before exit 1. A semi-truck was thrown on the I-24 westbound side and homes are left without roofs. RVs have been reported to be tipped with injuries, as well as power poles that were snapped or broken, as many trees and buildings had collapsed.
Nashville’s weather service reported that at least one tornado caused two deaths and one injury in Madison.
Metro Nashville Police Department has identified the dead as Joseph Dalton (37), Floridema Perez (31) and Anthony Elmer Mendez (2). Dalton, according to police, was in his mobile on Nesbitt Lane at the time the winds of the storm flipped the house onto Perez’s home. Perez’s son, aged 7, and Dalton’s son, age 10, were in their respective homes when the storm hit. Both children have received non-life-threatening injuries and are being treated at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. On Saturday, trees and roofs were blown off houses along Nesbitt lane.
NWS reported hail up to the size of quarters, as well as damage to houses and cars flipped on Interstate 65.
The hurricane destroyed many businesses on Main Street, Hendersonville. People gathered on Saturday evening to board broken windows. Edith Gonzalez, who worked at Rancho Cantina restaurant when the tornado hit, took shelter behind the bar. Her coworkers, as well as some of her customers, ran behind the bar to take shelter.
She says, “There was just the sound of the wind coming in and the shattering of the glass against the tree.” She uses her toes to gently nudge the tree that is surrounded by broken glasses on the floor. There’s an entire Christmas tree on the floor. “We believe it’s the only thing that stopped the glass flying in all the way.”
According to Dickson County Emergency Management there have been multiple houses damaged or destroyed in Cumberland Furnace, Claylick, and downtown Springfield, Robertson County.
Kelsey Bush is a resident of Slayden, in Dickson County. This area was affected by the tornado. The damage was described as “hellacious” by Bush.
