This Friday, October 13, two activists from the Climaximo collective threw red paint on a painting by Pablo Picasso at the MAC/CCB Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon, Portugal, which was protected by glass, to denounce that “there is no art on a planet dead”.
The two young people smeared paint on the glass that protects the painting “Femme dans un fauteuil (metamorphose)” (1929) by Picasso and then sat on the floor and stuck one of their hands to the wall, according to the images released by Climaximo in their social networks.
The group noted that “Governments and companies declared war against people and the planet” and explained that they chose Picasso’s painting for their protest action due to an anecdote by the painter during World War II.
“When German soldiers entered Picasso’s studio in Paris, where he lived during World War II, and saw Guernica, the famous work depicting the horrors of war, they asked him ‘did you do this?’. He replied ‘no.’ ‘You did it,'” he said in his publication.
The young people, who took advantage of a moment when the painting room had no visitors, were detained by the Police.
Climaximo activists have carried out several protest actions in recent weeks, such as blocking streets and highways or throwing paint on the headquarters of companies in the energy sector.
Other activists threw green paint at the Portuguese Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, last September, during a public event organized by the CNN television network, shouting “this is the last winter with gas.”
