Matthew Sturgess has fled the scene despite several witnesses, CCTV footage and denying being the driver

After a serious accident, the driver of a vehicle sped up and collided head-on with another motorist. This caused severe injuries. Sturgess, an ex-drug dealer, fled from the scene of the accident. Christopher Graham (54), who was trapped inside the crumpled car, would spend the next 8 months bedridden.

Sturgess drove off from his Rowlatts Hill apartment at Wicklow Drive in Leicester around 9am. Sturgess did not possess a driver’s license and insurance. Sturgess lost control after he drove at high-speed and skidded in the direction of oncoming traffic.

He hit Mr Graham Micra’s Nissan Micra head-on, sandwiched by Sturgess Honda and an parked car. The Nissan engine pushed Mr Graham backwards upon impact. This caused him to sustain injuries, including broken legs and one broken rib. He also suffered long and deep lacerations on both of his legs as well.

Sturgess – now 32 – who was able to escape serious injury – got out and started walking away. He threw his jacket into a backyard near the Honda in order to disguise his identity. To free Graham, firefighters had to chop the Nissan in five pieces.

After returning to his home, Sturgess picked up a bike and cycled back the site of the accident. There, he searched through the vehicle’s passenger compartment. Sturgess claimed he was not the driver, but a local resident accused him of it. He told the resident that he had been a friend to someone in the front seat who was fetching belongings.

Sturgess, the driver of the Honda, was arrested by the witness at the crash scene. Leicestershire Police then arrived. Sturgess continued to lie about not having been in the Honda Civic during the collision, even though three witnesses including Mr Graham identified Sturgess and there was CCTV footage of him at the scene.

Sturgess who had been diagnosed with Schizophrenia in 2000 pleaded no contest to the charge of causing serious injuries by driving dangerously after being charged. He was deemed mentally incompetent to plead guilty by his lawyers.

He was originally scheduled to be tried in October, but pleaded guilty in May. Sturgess, who appeared in court on Thursday, had 34 offences against him, including class A drug dealing, driving under the influence, and driving without any insurance.

Pree Bradley, Sturgess’s lawyer, told reporters that her client is “extremely, extremely sorry.” She also said what Sturgess did was uncharacteristic. She recommended a suspended prison sentence and a curfew.

David Richards said, as he sentenced Sturgess: “Your behavior caused an incredible amount of damage, and this harm will last for Mr Graham’s lifetime.” Ms Brada told me that you were very sorry. Now you might be.

Sturgess, who was released after nine months in prison, has been disqualified from the sport for three year.

Outside the court, Graham, 58, now using a crutch to walk, stated that he returned home after a nine-hour shift in a warehouse when he met with an accident. He told the court that he had seen his vehicle out of balance but was unable to stop it.

He did his very best, and for that I thank him. “This has changed the course of my entire life. My legs are kept together by screws.”
