Katarina Garcia, co-interim library director, says that she learned on Saturday of the water damage inflicted upon 100s books at the library.
You feel your heart sink when you notice that the books are water-damaged. Right, we’ve been renewing or replacing books. It was definitely an emotional moment.
The water damage was discovered by their staff on Saturday, 9:30am. At this point, she says they do not know the full details of what happened.
We have cordoned the area off. However, we suggest that you hold off on taking small children into the library until later or to supervise them closely while in the building. We apologize for any inconvenience. Our goal is to fix it as quickly as possible. “We were told by the insurance firm to close off the affected area.”
Garrecht notes that it was decided to close the library immediately on Saturday.
We had to call in maintenance to assess the situation. We are closed on Mondays, which is why we were not open today. However, we have assessed the situation and been told that the remainder of the building can be opened tomorrow as long as the area has been cordoned-off and that no one enters the area.
Garrecht says they’ve not assessed the damages completely but they did a walkthrough of the area affected.
Garrecht says that the staff at Jake Epp Library would like to let visitors know that their doors are open for business tomorrow, Tuesday. She asks parents and guardians to please watch their children.
It’s cordoned-off, because, you know. Isn’t it just tape? They can run under the tape. We will also try to manage the area. We didn’t close down the entire building because people come to this place to learn and so on.
Garrecht says they’re waiting on a damage assessment from their insurer, and that could take a long time. However, the library will remain open as usual during normal hours.
